It’s 1981, and tennis player John McEnroe is in the middle of a tennis match with Tim Gullickson at Wimbledon. During the game, the umpire called a ball out, when McEnroe claimed that it hit the line, thereby designating the ball in play. The tirade sounded something like this.
So after that little tirade, comedian Roger Kitter, who appeared in the World War II farce comedy TV series ‘Allo! ‘Allo! recorded a novelty track called “Chalk Dust – The Umpire Strikes Back,” which became a UK Top 10 hit. Here’s Kitter performing his song on an episode of the British TV show Top of the Pops.
So maybe one of these days, we’ll see a comedy routine thanks to the petulant antics of tennis players like Jeff Tarango…
Or Andy Roddick’s imitation of Maria Sharapova during a tennis charity tournament…
Or Maria Sharapova doing her best Andy Roddick impersonation at another charity tournament…
Or Nikolay Davydenko having a spirited discussion with the umpire…
Or one of Roger Federer’s shots bouncing off a ballboy who wasn’t paying attention to the action…
Or Martina Navratilova returning from the washroom, only to discover that her doubles partner, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, is playing a tennis match with one of the ball boys.
Oh heck, let’s just show a video of the worst temper tantrums in tennis from 2010.
And if you liked those, here’s a batch from 2009.
Ha! Thanks for that early morning chuckle.
